The objective of this paper focuses on developing a new technique for the speed estimation of general DC brushed motor (abbreviated as DC motor) without using shaft transducer in its feedback mechanism. As the brushes move from one commutator segment to the next, the dynamic current of DC motor produced on one of the power lines of the motor input is varied and used as the basis of sensorless speed estimation. The frequency of the ripple current closely depending upon the motor speed is measured by observing the variations of each commutation segment. Especially, the developed hardware-based speed detector is the main advantages of the proposed sensorless technique method. The performance of the motor speed characteristic employing the proposed system as its feedback has been validated through some experimental tests based on a laboratory scale prototype. The conducted tests indicate that the proposed method has a lot of outstanding performance, such as decreased maintenance, cost-effective final system, number of connections, and easier miniaturization process.
