In this paper, a framework for fault detection and isolation of sensors and actuators is proposed. Firstly, we will propose a methodology for fault identification after the fault detection and before the fault isolation. The approach is based on a preliminary analysis of the unknown-input observability property, from [4-6]. Secondly, if the faulty system is under an “observability canonical form”, it is possible to construct a bank of high-gain observers from [16] for fault isolation. A simula¬tion study of a waste water treatment plant under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, in the presence of noisy measure¬ments and uncertainties in the kinetic parameters, shows the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
