In order to evaluate the human balance ability of static standing more objectively, a force platform detection device was used to collect the motion trajectory of the centre of gravity of the human body, and the real-time operating system of QNX as core and an industrial level PC/104 controller were used to build an evaluation system. The COP data of the subjects were collected under two states, with eyes open and closed. Visual feedback information was used to adjust the balance when the eyes were open, which was presented as a red point on a monitor screen. After analyzing the data by the characteristic quantity of the chaotic system, the largest Lyapunov exponent was adopted as an evaluation index. Results of an experimental study on 20 healthy college students and 20 elderly people showed that the older group’s balance stability in both males and females is lower than that of young males and females and the balance ability fell respectively by 32.1% and 24.1%, which validated the feasibility of this method.
