Edge detection is an important first step operation of obtaining information from an image. In this paper, a new edge detection operator is proposed, which is based on the principle of evaluating the local fluctuation of pixel values. The pixel values within a mask are normalized so that they can be treated as probabilities. Then, modified Tsallis entropy of the probabilities is calculated. Edges are detected where the value of this entropy is below a properly chosen threshold. The obtained edges are further refined by a morphological operation. Generalizations to color images are also considered. The new operator shows promising effect in the simulation.
