Topical Approach and Parsing Framework to the Shi Syntax-Semantics Mismatched Structure in Chinese

- Abstract
- The paper takes a close look at the Chinese shì syntax-semantics mismatched structure. It is proposed that other than the copular interpretation, shì in such structures should be reanalysed as the topic marker. The parsing framework for such structure is TP[T[T Tm]TP[T[T Tm]…IP]]], in which TP can be generated in a recursive manner. Such topical analysis is further proved to be more consistent and effective to both mismatched and matched structures.
